Rent receipts for HRA: format and rules
If you live in a rented home and get House Rent Allowance, your employer usually asks for rent receipts before reducing tax on your HRA. Here is what a valid receipt contains and how to make all of them at once.
What each rent receipt should show
- Tenant’s name and landlord’s name.
- Address of the rented property.
- Rent amount, in figures and words, and the month it covers.
- Date and mode of payment (bank transfer, UPI, cheque or cash).
- Landlord’s signature, and PAN when required.
- A revenue stamp if rent above ₹5,000 is paid in cash.
When is the landlord’s PAN needed?
When the rent you pay in a year is more than ₹1,00,000, employers ask for the landlord’s PAN. Under the new rules effective from April 2026, employees are reported to declare landlord details (name, address, PAN and relationship) on a new employer declaration form, and employers may ask for a rent agreement as well as receipts. Paying by bank transfer or UPI makes proof easier.

Important
HRA exemption is available only under the old tax regime, and receipts must reflect rent you actually paid. Your employer and the tax department can ask for bank statements or the rent agreement to verify. Rules change, so confirm current requirements with your employer or a tax adviser.
